Health Screenings

Health screenings along with regular physical exams can help ensure that common, serious diseases and conditions are detected and treated. They are an important part of preventive health care.

The Fun, Fit & Fabulous conference will offer several free health screenings. No special preparation is needed for you to get any of the screenings.

The following screenings will be offered (subject to change):

  • Cholesterol: A simple blood test measures the fats (lipids) in your blood. This test typically includes total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol (the "good" cholesterol) and triglyceride levels (fats carried in the blood from the food we eat). Undesirable levels of lipids raise your risk of heart attack and stroke.
  • Blood pressure: To perform this test, an inflatable cuff is wrapped around your upper arm to measure the pressure your heart generates when pumping blood out through your arteries (systolic pressure) and the amount of pressure that is in your arteries when your heart is at rest between beats (diastolic pressure). High blood pressure can put you at greater risk of heart attack, stroke, heart failure and kidney damage.
  • Glucose: The glucose test measures your body's response to sugar (glucose). The test can be used to screen for type 2 diabetes. A tiny drop of blood is put into a meter to determine your blood sugar level.
  • Bone density: A bone density test can determine if you are at risk for osteoporosis — a disease that causes bones to become weaker and more likely to break. The test measures the amount of calcium and other minerals in your bone. Bones weaken with age, so older women are encouraged to have this test more often.
